Water
Water supply is the major factor that regulates the growth of riparian vegetation. Flood waters transport nutrients, sediments and new seeds from upstream. Ground water offers a steady source of water for the stream and the riparian zone, occasionally being the only source of water for the stream.
Soil
Soil type influences the amount of water and nutrients available. Organic-rich soil holds water and provides nutrients to plants. Denser vegetation will be found in this type of soil vs. gravely soil.
Topography
The shape of the land affects the location and abundance of plants in the riparian zone.
Climate
Climate affects the vegetation found in a riparian zone. Different vegetation will be found in desert riparian areas vs. mountain streams and rivers
