Its turkey time again! 4-H turkey project poult orders are due by 6 pm on April 11th at the 4-H office. Poults still cost $2 each, (make checks payable to Utah Jr. Turkey Show). Youth must be in 3rd grade or older this year and enrolled in 4-H (or FFA) for 2013-14. Each youth may order up to 20 poults; use a separate form for each participant. Poults should arrive around Friday, July 18th. Arrange your schedule and be present for their arrival. Only immediate family members (siblings) are permitted to raise birds together in the same pen.
There are new requirements this year. They are listed on the order form. Implementation of rules will keep state and county shows compliant with USDA regulations and hopefully ensure future of program. A meeting for all participants, parents, and leaders will be held May 14th at 6:30 pm at the 4-H office. Plan to attend.
The State Jr. Turkey Show is scheduled November 13-15th in Box Elder County. Youth may enter 1 tom and 1 hen. The Tooele County Turkey Show will be held on Nov. 18th. You must enter state show to be eligible for county show. Additional information about shows and processing dates for extra birds will be available this fall.
Rule Change! All participants are required to turn in a record book (4-H Portfolio) with processing forms. From now on, all youth who order poults will turn in a record book even if they have no turkeys to enter into the show. Failure to produce a book will make youth ineligible to order poults for future shows. 4-H Portfolio workshops will be scheduled, watch the 4-H newsletter and tooele4h.org for dates and times. Feel free to call the office anytime if you have questions about 4-H Portfolios. Turkeys ordered through 4-H must be processed at the 4-H/FFA processing plant in Bothwell; no exceptions!
We look forward to a great project this year and hope it will be successful for you. Feel free to share this information with other youth that may be interested. Please call the office (277-2400), if you have any questions.
