Description: The water resources group at the University of Idaho’s Kimberly Research and Extension Center is a national leader on consumption of water by irrigated agriculture and natural systems. The group also conducts research on water quality and hydrology. The group has developed the METRIC platform for transforming satellite imagery into maps of water consumption and the REF-ET and ETIdaho systems for calculating reference crop ET and for reporting crop water requirements for the State of Idaho.

Program: Cultivating Success Idaho: Sustainable Small Farm Education

Description: Cultivating Success works to creating and implement educational programs to increase the number and foster the success of sustainable small acreage farmers and ranchers in Idaho. It is a partnership between University of Idaho, Washington State University and the nonprofit organization Rural Roots.

Program: IDAH2O Master Water Stewards

Description: Once a volunteer becomes a certified IDAH2O Master Water Steward, they adopt a stream location to monitor regularly. Monitoring includes habitat, biological, chemical and physical assessments. Participants attend an 8-hour workshop that combines classroom instruction and hands-on fieldwork. All data collected is added to a public website.

Idaho has participated in the Champion Trees program since the mid-1960s, with a shared mission of locating, measuring, and recognizing the largest individual tree of each species.
