Make Your Own Knitting Needles
Making your own knitting needles can be fun. Yarn will not slip as easily on wooden knitting needles, making them a good choice for beginners.
You will need:
- Stitch gauge
- 36” Wooden dowel
- 4 Wooden beads
- Pencil sharpener
- 150 grit Sand paper
- Glue
Knitting needle size | 10 | 11 | 13 | 15 | 17 |
Wooden dowel size | ¼” | 5/15” | 3/8” | 7/16” | ½” |
Wooden bead | 16mm | 16mm | 20mm | 20mm | 24mm |
A 36” wooden dowel can be cut into fourths to make two sets of 9” knitting needles. If the beads do not
have a large enough hole drill a hole the same size as the diameter of the dowel. Sharpen the end of the
dowel with a pencil sharpener. (The ½” dowel may need to be sanded smaller to fit into the pencil sharpener). Glue the bead on one end or sharpen both ends for double pointed needles. Sand until smooth with fine sand paper. Check with a knit cloth or sock to make sure there are no rough areas.
