Salt Lake County Extension

Welcome to Utah State University cooperative extension in Salt Lake County.  The Salt Lake County Extension provides informal education to you through workshops, mass media, demonstrations, 4-H clubs, Master Gardener Volunteers, telephone consultations, individual and group meetings, and educational bulletins.

         You are invited to attend our Holiday Fair!  We offer FREE demos and Make N’ Take workshops in gardening, healthy holiday eating, quick holiday crafts, holiday food safety, holiday budgeting, and 4-H Youth programs. Enjoy complimentary refreshments, 15% off all USU publications, purchase a festive plant for your office or home, and enter our prize giveaway. Our mission at USU Extension is to provide unbiased, research-based educational programs that will enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Salt Lake County. Build your own Financial Binder (booth) 10:30 am - 2:00 pm  Location: In the Atrium.  Compile a binder that organizes your automobile titles, tax records, birth and death certificates, will and trust, mortgage papers, financial goals, spending plan, property inventories, personal and professional directories and much more.

Make Holiday Tags & Grab & Go Kits (booth) 10:30 am - 2:00 pm  Location: In the Atrium.  Create beautiful gift tags from scratch using your own creativity.  Our Grab & Go Kits are great for small items such as first aid materials, medicine, or anything you'd like to carry.

Discover our 4-H Youth Development Program (booth)
10:30 am - 2:00 pm  Location: In the Atrium.  4-H is a national youth program for children that emphasizes "learning by doing".  Our primary goal is to assist youth in developing life skills. 

Stretching Your Holiday Dollar (Workshop) 11:00 am - 11:40 am. Location: S1007.  Holiday time can be stressfull, especially when household resources are limited.  Come learn some ideas on how to stretch your dollars and still enjoy the holidays.

Holiday Food Safety (Tasting Table) 11:00 am - 12:00 pm. Location: S1008.  When holiday feasting is central to your gatherings, knowing what the rules of food safety are can eliminate food-borne illness.  Come learn more and enjoy a sample of food.

Healthy Holiday Eating (Tasting Table) 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm. Location: Atrium.  The holidays are filled with fantastic food and treats which can lead to the not-so-pleasant side effects of the sugar and fat-loaded foods. Come learn how to make the holidays more healthy, without eliminating the good stuff.

Starting Vegetable Seeds Indoors (Make N' Take) 12:15 pm - 12:45 pm. Location: S1008.  Starting your own vegetable seeds indoors can be a quick, fun, and inexpensive way to start your garden.  Learn about simple tools and how to use vermicomposting in your garden.

Lotions and Potions - Make your own Lip-gloss (Make N' Take)
2 classes offered. 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm & 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm.  Location: S1008.  Making your own lip-gloss is simple and fun and make great gifts for family and friends. Get creative by mixing flavors and colors.

   Check your Health: Sowing the Seeds of Change - Channel 2 News

Maggie Shao, USU Extension Horticulture Agent, discusses the Salt Lake County Jail Horticulture Program with Channel 2.  It's purpose is to use gardening as a way to sow the seeds of change in troubled men in the jail system.  They learn the economics of gardening as well as nutrition.

Nov 18, 2009 (Wed) 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.  Come learn ways to practice a more simple life, relieve stress, and improve an your overall quality of life. Bring your lunch and enjoy.
Nov 19, 2009 (Thur) 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM.  Learn some new ideas for using your herbal harvest as gifts for thie holiday season.
