Webster Flat

1936

2006

Description:

Plate 1338X. Webster Flat 1936 – 2006 Viewed southwest to Black Mountain (10,400 ft) from the start of the old snow survey course on Webster Flat. The meadow is more vegetated today than in the past. The meadow has not been treated and is mostly mountain brome, slender wheatgrass, yarrow, and dandelion with carex, wiregrass, and bistort in wetter areas. Conifers have increased in the distance, though, many of the older spruce were recently killed by insects and disease. Except for a handful of new saplings, aspen has not successfully regenerated in many years due to excessive ungulate browsing (Ohms 2003). The area was actively being grazed by domestic sheep in 2006. All aspen suckers showed evidence of repeated browsing.
