Water Canyon

1910

2007

Description:

Plate 1483X. Water Canyon 1910 – 2007 Viewed southeast up Water Canyon in the Pine Valley Mountains west of Upper Enterprise Reservoir. Pinyon and juniper now block the original camera station, so the retake was made from the nearest open area. The watershed was very heavily grazed by livestock during the early 1900’s and soil erosion was widespread. Since then AUM allocations have been reduced and rest-rotation grazing instituted. With proper management, woody riparian vegetation has increased, the streambanks are more vegetated, and erosion has declined. Pinyon, juniper, oakbrush, Utah serviceberry, and willows have all increased, as have sedges along the creek. Rubber rabbitbrush and sagebrush are also present. Cattle were actively grazing in the site when it was visited in 2007.
