Virgin River

Description:

Plate 1201X. Virgin River 1929 – 2006 Viewed northeast across the Virgin River in Zion National Park. On the right skyline are the Twin Brothers (6,863 ft), while the Mountain of the Sun (6,722 ft) is on the left. The bridge in the 1929 image has been removed - - this site is approXimately 300 yards above the current bridge (see Plate 1198X). Pinyon, juniper, and turbinella oak have increased. As the old cottonwoods die, they are not being replaced by younger trees due to eXcessive browsing of new seedlings by an unnatural concentration of mule deer (Ripple and Beschta 2006). Note the cottonwood seedlings and saplings on the island in the retake - - an area less frequently visited by mule deer. Those plants, however, are unlikely to survive the neXt flood.
