Plate 23X

Description:

Plate 23X. Steep Creek ca. 1960-2002 The original photograph was taken to document how the meadow was covered with soil eroded from the adjacent hillsides - - see Plates 21x, 22x, and 24x. Those slopes were contour-trenched, gully-plugged, and reseeded by the Forest Service in 1962 and active soil erosion has now ceased. The area is still heavily grazed by cattle but domestic sheep use has long since been eliminated - - see Plate 33x. Snowberry appears to have increased in the foreground, but willows appear unchanged. Aspen surrounding the meadow, though, has not regenerated in nearly 100 years due to excessive ungulate browsing. Viewed southwest. U.S. Forest Service photograph (unnumbered) taken ca. 1960; retake by Charles E. Kay on July 8, 2002 - - Photo No. 4962-15. Section 15, Range 5 East, Township 32 South; UTM 469500E, 4208800N; elevation 9,350 ft. Original photo held by Southern Utah University Archives and Special Collections, Cedar City, UT.
