Description:

Plate 695X. Pine Valley Mountain View Administration Site 1943 – 1948 – 1953 – 1979 – 2004 In 1938 this 40 acre Forest Service horse pasture was seeded with crested wheatgrass. Furrows 8 to 12 feet apart were made with a plow and the seed broadcast. “A very nice stand of grass was thus obtained in the sagebrush type…[and this Photo Plot Transect was established] to determine the competition status between grass and sagebrush.” Plate 695x is viewed south to the Pine Valley Mountains from the end of the Photo Plot Transect. Mountain big sage has declined while grasses have increased. Grasses include crested wheatgrass, cheatgrass, mutton grass (Poa fendleriana), intermediate wheatgrass, Indian rice grass, and hairy grama (Bouteloua hirsuta). In the distance, conifers have increased including ponderosa pine, white fir, spruce, pinyon, and juniper. Mountain brush has also increased.
