The Watchman

1929

2006

Description:

Plate 1215X. The Watchman 1929 – 2006 Viewed southeast across the Virgin River to The Watchman (6,545 ft) in Zion National Park. When the 1929 image was made, the area in the foreground was privately owned but has since been added to the park. Today the park headquarters building is on the left, while the emergency services building is on the right. Juniper now block the original view, so the retake was made from the nearest open area. Utah Highway 9 has been realigned, widened, and paved. Cottonwoods have increased in height and obscure the view of South Campground. The park buildings are at the mouth of Oak Creak, which flows from right to left. Pinyon, juniper, and turbinella oak have increased in the distance.
