Sweetwater Creek

1934

2002

Description:

Plate 102X. Sweetwater Creek 1934-2002 Viewed east up Sweetwater Valley near Widtsoe, Utah. The original image was taken to document the headwall erosion that was occurring at the time. Since the initial photograph was made, the adjoining benches were root-plowed and reseeded to crested wheatgrass, but rubber rabbitbrush has since reinvaded the site. The area was heavily grazed by cattle in 2002. Nevertheless, headwall erosion has slowed considerably since the original photograph was taken. Pinyon, juniper, and ponderosa pine have increased on the distant hillside. The cut area is not on Sweetwater Creek itself but on an arroyo that drains into that stream.
