Plate 1166X. Red Valley 1961 – 2005 Viewed southeast in Red Valley. The area was heavily grazed by cattle in 1961 and 2005. Conifers, primarily spruce and Douglas fir, have increased, while aspen has declined. Aspen has failed to regenerate due to repeated ungulate browsing (Kay and Bartos 2000). The road seen in the 1961 image is now passable only to ATV’s.
