Paria Butte

1921

2004

Description:

Plate 443X. Paria Butte 1921 – 2004 Viewed east to Paria Butte near the old Paria townsite. The large juniper on the left in the retake obscures the view of the Paria movie set built at the base of the butte. According to the caption on the original photo, the butte’s lower Chinle formation is capped by a remnant of Wingate sandstone. The shrubs in the foreground, which are primarily cliff rose, juniper, silverberry, Apache plume, Mormon tea, and Utah serviceberry, do not appear as heavily browsed today as they did in the past. Plant density also appears to have increased. Original photograph taken by R.C. Moore (No. 152) in 1921; retake by Charles E. Kay on May 15, 2004 - - Photo No. 5310-12. S
