Mount Marvine

1930

1996

Description:

Plate 22. MOUNT MARVINE: 1930 - 1996 This photo set is similar to Plate 21 except for the mounted rider present among the cattle in the 1930 photo. Conifers have increased in both height and numbers on the upper slopes of Mt. Marvine, as would be expected the absence of fire. Much of the aspen (Populus tremuloides) in the 1930 photo appear to have regenerated successfully, but this is not the case in 1996 even though the aspen has increased in height. The conifers in the mid-ground are taller but otherwise unchanged; they are growing among boulders, which explains why they did not burn in the past when fires were more frequent. The sub-irrigated meadow in the foreground was heavily grazed by cattle in 1996. Silver sage (Artemisia cana) appears to be more abundant in 1996, especially in the area behind the cattle in the 1930 photo. The willows (Salix spp.) around the edge of the conifers in the mid-ground appear unchanged as do those on the more distant hillside.
