Long Valley Exclosure

1966

2005

Description:

Plate 1105X. Long Valley Exclosure 1966 – 2005 The Forest Service built a 6.9 acre exclosure at the head of Long Valley in 1960. The exclosure is bounded on the north and west by Cedar Breaks National Monument. The exclosure was fenced only to exclude domestic sheep, not deer or elk - - as this was and is a sheep allotment. The area inside the exclosure was disced, pitted, and reseeded with smooth brome, Kentucky bluegrass, intermediate wheatgrass, and slender wheatgrass. The USFS fences on the east and south have not been maintained since sometime during the 1970’s and thus, sheep have grazed the treated site for a number of years. The fences on the north and west, however, have been maintained by the National Park Service to prevent sheep from entering the National Monument. Many of the photopoints inside the old exclosure are still marked with steel stakes. There appears to be a greater cover of forbs and native grasses on the National Monument, where sheep have not grazed for many years, than inside the former exclosure. Plate 1105x is viewed northeast to the east exclosure fence, which has not been functional for many years. The 1966 image was made 6 years after treatment and the exclusion of domestic sheep. Most of the mature spruce in the distance were recently killed by insects and disease. The few tall shrubs are currants. The area had been grazed by domestic sheep in 2005.
