Description:

Plate 1448X. Lava Point 1962 – 2007 Plates 1446x to 1450x form a panorama taken from Lava Point in Zion National Park. Plate 1448x is viewed north across Kolob Creek to Hornet (9,370 ft.) and Thorley (8,855 ft.) Points. White fir, spruce, pinyon, juniper, ponderosa pine, and oakbrush have increased, while aspen has declined. Many of the larger spruce were recently killed by insects and disease. The original photopoint is now blocked by woody vegetation, so the retake was made from the nearest open area. New homes and roads have been built on private lands outside the park.
