Description:

Plate 87. FRYING PAN CAMPGROUND: 1962 - 1999 LOCATION: NOTE: This is a view along the entrance road to Frying Pan Campground near Fish Lake. Aspen (Populus tremuloides) declined in the campground between 1962 and 1999, but stands on the steeper hillside have regenerated. The 1962 photo was taken in the late fall when aspen was leafless. Silver sage (Artemisia cana) and shrubby cinquefoil (Potentilla fruticosa) occupy the flat area behind the cattle guard, while mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata vaseyana) and curlleaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius) occur on the steeper hillsides. The older Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) on the upper part of the mountain are growing on fire refugia.
