Danish Meadows

1902

1995

Description:

Plate 2. DANISH MEADOWS: 1902 -1995 The condition of the vegetation in the original photograph indicates a history of frequent burning whereas plant communities in the recent photo reflect 100 years of fire suppression. Aspen (Populus tremuloides) has matured only to be invaded by a marked increase in conifers. Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) also appears to have increased, especially on the distant hillsides, as would be expected in the absence of fire. U M Creek has changed little except for the absence of the few willows in the original photo.
