Dameron Canyon

1941

1999

Description:

Plate 167 DAMERON CANYON: 1941 - 1999 This is on the Dameron winter range south of Kanosh. The 1941 photo was taken to document severe browsing by mule deer on cliffrose (Cowania stansburiana). In 1999 pinyon (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniperus sp.) appear much more abundant on the far hillside at the expense of cliffrose and other preferred browse species. Sometime after the 1941 photo was taken, the area in the foreground was chained and seeded by the Forest Service and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to reclaim wildlife habitat. Mule deer use continued to be so heavy that the cliffrose had not recovered by 1999.
