Plate 1141X. Castle Valley 1957 – 2005 Viewed southeast along line one of the Parker Three-Step Transect in Castle Valley. Silver sage has increased. The meadow is mostly needle and thread, Stipa spp., and squirreltail. In the distance, aspen has declined, while conifers have increased. Many mature spruce, though, were recently killed by insects and disease.
