Plate 322X. Big Lake Exclosure 1957 - 2003 Viewed north to the Big Lake exclosure on the Awapa Plateau. The exclosure is approximately one mile north of Big Lake and just west of Forest Service Road 154 - - note the vehicle on the roadway in the retake. Spruce has increased, while aspen has declined. The meadow contains numberous mima mounds - - slightly-elevated circular landforms created by pocket gophers over hundreds or thousands of years. Silver sage in the retake is growing primarily on top of the mima mounds where the soil is deepest. Silver sage has increased, especially inside the exclosure. The area outside the exclosure was heavily grazed by cattle in 2003.
