Description:

Plate 969X. Assay Bench 1957 – 2005 Viewed east along Assay Bench. The road in the 1957 photo has eroded and is no longer passable. Since the original image was made, the area has been root-plowed and reseeded with smooth brome, intermediate wheatgrass, and crested wheatgrass - - see Plates 970x, 971x, and 972x. Part of the area was also burned by the Unita Flat Wildfire in 1989. Nevertheless, ponderosa pine and juniper have increased and the treated area has been invaded by mountain big sage and bitterbrush. The site was actively being grazed by cattle in 2005. Elk and deer use was also evident.
