UPCOMING DATES
May 15, 2013
Dear 4-H horse members, parents, and leaders:
We would like to welcome you to the 2013 4-H horse program. There are several new items planned that should make this year’s program exciting for all who participate.
One major change for this year is that the traditional spring show will be a training activity. This will be a free activity. Next, the fund raising activity will be a $100 Circle V Meat gift certificate. The winner will be able to purchase the meat of their choice. All members who sell their 25 tickets will receive $5 off the county fair show entry fee. Also for each ticket the member sells, they will earn one point (100 point maximum) towards the overall year end awards program. The events for this year will include: written test, showmanship, horsemanship, trail, poles, barrels, and the quadrangle stake race. We will also make available a Juab County 4-H Horse shirt for any interested youth or adult. Estimated cost will be $8-$12. This will depend on the number ordered. Those interested will be able to order one at one of the activities or shows.
For youth to be involved in the 4-H horse program, they need to be in at least third grade and eight years old as of October 1, 2012. The three groups are divided by school grade as of the previous date.
Juniors: 3rd- 5th grade Intermediates: 6th- 8th grade Seniors: 9th- 12th grade
The horse enrollment fee will be $12.00. All those planning on participating in this year’s program, need to enroll with their leader or at the office with fees paid by the first show or activity that they participate in. We will not be enrolling members at the shows. If they are not enrolled at the office before the first show they participate in, they will not be allowed to show. We also want to mention that after May 30th, only members and leaders who have signed up for this year will stay on the current horse mailing list. All members should be enrolled in the different clubs with fees paid before attending any club meetings. The entry fee for each of the two shows will be $15.00. Because of the small projected number of members for this year and limited budget, the awards will vary at the shows. At the summer show the awards will be cash for the top three winners of the test, one judged, and one speed event. No cash awards will awarded to the other class winners. At the county fair show, depending on the number of participants, cash awards will be awarded to the top three winners in all seven events.
The horse council officers for this year are Sharon Micheal, President; Cori Nuzman, Vice President, and Jen Housley, Secretary.
This year, we will again be sponsoring the 4-H horse overall year end award contest. Enclosed you will find the details for the contest. Below you will find the tentative dates for the shows and some of the events for this year.

The spring activity will be held Thursday, May 30 starting at 10:00 a.m. There will be no cost for the activity. This activity is for all members and adults. The activity will include a number of fun and educational events to help train the members in the different events. There is also the possibility of having the members do some judging of the adults. We would like all members to bring their horse for the activity. This should be a great opening activity. If you have any questions about the activity, give the office or Sharon a call.
At the summer and county fair shows, all participants will be required to take the test and enter the Showmanship class. Members will be required to wear a 4-H patch. They are available at the Extension office. At the summer show, the written test will cover just the first half of each book. At the county fair show, the tests will cover the second half of each book.
Any new adult planning on serving as a 4-H leader will be required to fill out a leader application form if they have not yet filled one out. If you need an application, stop by the office and pick one up. Also, any adult planning on serving as a leader this year will need to come to the office and fill out an enrollment form to be counted as a leader during 2013.
We would encourage you to check out the state 4-H horse program web site at www.utah4hhorse.org. You can find a lot of valuable information at the site.
For those in the Nephi area, we have the south arena reserved each Thursday night from 6-8:00 p.m. when there is not a major event scheduled. We would encourage each of you to take advantage of the practice time.
We hope everyone is excited about this year’s program. If you have questions about any of these activities, give the office a call.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey E Banks
USU Extension Agent
Remember you need to be enrolled as a current member to utilize the arena at the fairgrounds.
