Gardens Open House Features “Dragon Wagon” and New Greenhouse

KAYSVILLE, UT – The final Utah State University Botanical Center Farmers Market is held Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. and will include a gardens open house. In addition, there will be food powered by the Dragon Wagon, USU’s mobile gasification unit designed to make electricity from wood as a sustainable energy alternative.

Tour maps for the gardens will be available at the farmers market information booth, and tour guides will be stationed at the four botanical gardens to provide free plant lists and information. The tour includes the Varga Arboretum, the new Stokes Ornamental Grass Garden, the Utah House Garden and the new Backyard Demonstration Orchard.

The new high tunnel greenhouse is located in the Backyard Demonstration Orchard area, and USU Extension horticulturist Britney Hunter will be there to answer questions about extended season gardening and greenhouse structures.

The Dragon Wagon will create electricity to prepare food from T’s Grill. The electricity created is enough to power two homes.

“This will be an exceptional night at the USU Botanical Center Farmers Market,” said Hunter. “The weather will be perfect to bring the family for a walk through the new labyrinth and to taste test fresh-picked apple varieties that will be at the information booth.”

The farmers market is located at 850 South 50 West in Kaysville. The Backyard Demonstration Orchard can be accessed from Sego Lily Drive (725 South) off of 50 West in Kaysville.
