TRUE AGGIES CELEBRATE USU’S COLLEGE OF AG WEEK
LOGAN ? Utah State University kicks off its first college-week celebration Sept. 25 to Oct. 2, and it’s only natural that the first of the seven colleges to celebrate is the College of Agriculture.
This year’s theme is We’re True Aggies (No kissing required).
“We are anxious to show off what we do in the College of Agriculture,” said Janet Anderson, associate dean for the college. “The industry of agriculture is diverse and rapidly changing. It is exciting that we are preparing the next generation by offering degrees not only in agricultural production, but also in nutrition, pre-medicine, family and consumer sciences and agricultural economics.”
According to Amy Petersen, USU College of Agriculture student senator, the events planned will reflect the college’s diversity. Ag Week begins Friday, Sept. 25, with the USU rodeo at the Cache County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. The rodeo is held both Friday and Saturday nights.
The 15th annual Utah Agriculture Products Barbecue is Saturday, Sept. 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. on the practice field west of the Stan Laub Center prior to the USU homecoming football game. More than a dozen agricultural commodity groups participate in providing a feast of Utah beef, pork, lamb, turkey, dairy products, apples, corn on the cob, onion rings and salad. Barbecue admission price is $8 for adults and $5 for children, with proceeds going to a College of Agriculture scholarship endowment.
On Monday, Sept. 28, a tractor parade is held at 2 p.m. and begins at the Romney Stadium parking lot, then movie night is at 8 p.m. at the South Farm, 3680 S., Highway 89-91 in Wellsville. Tuesday is faculty appreciation day and the College of Agriculture opening social, dinner and dance at the Agricultural Systems Technology and Education Building, 1498 N.
800 E. at 6 p.m.
Ag Day on the Quad is Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where there will be a variety of games, activities, food and signups for College of Agriculture clubs. An Ag in the Classroom service project is held later at the Taggart Student Center International Lounge at 5 p.m., with country dancing at 9 p.m. at the Cache Valley Fun Park, 255 E. 1770 North, Logan.
Other celebration activities include a donut eating contest on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. on the Taggart Student Center Patio and an awards and honors reception and banquet that evening for students, faculty and donors. The concluding event is a chuck wagon breakfast Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the Taggart Student Center patio.
“We hope our students, alumni and community members will join us in our Ag Week activities,” said Anderson. “They are designed to bring those interested in agriculture together and give them a snapshot of the exciting, diverse things our college has to offer.”
