USU Extension Sponsors Utah Building Farmers Program – Intermediate Track

            LOGAN Farmers, ranchers and food producers can refine and enhance their leadership and risk management skills at the Utah Building Farmers Program 4-week intermediate track evening class series. Sponsored by Utah State University Extension, classes are designed to help experienced farmers enhance their management skills related to labor, food safety, contracts, farm transition and estate planning and liability management. The program is held on Wednesdays from 5 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 30, Nov. 6, 13 and 20 at the USU Botanical Center Utah House in Kaysville.

            According to Kynda Curtis, Utah State University Extension agricultural marketing specialist, the class series is designed for farmers and ranchers with 3 to 8 years of experience who have a written business plan, those who previously completed the direct market track of the Utah Building Farmers Program, or experienced farmers and ranchers who want to enhance their current business or transition the business to the next generation.

“Consumer demand for local foods has increased dramatically in the last couple of years, providing an excellent opportunity for local agricultural producers,” Curtis said.

The Utah Building Farmers Program aims to help agricultural producers by focusing on building and reinforcing capacity through interaction with Extension, producer peers and community resources. The program also aims to build a strong community network among producers involved in direct marketing. Program topics include: Developing Yourself as a Business Leader, Managing a Diverse Labor Force, Legal Risk Management, Farm/Ranch Transition and Estate Planning, and Food Safety Begins on the Farm.

            Registration fee is $80 for all four sessions and includes dinner at each session and program materials. Meals allow opportunities for participants to network.
