Women and Youth in Agriculture Conference
LOGAN, UT – Utah State University Extension co-sponsors the Great Basin Women and Youth in Agriculture Conference June 14-16 in Las Vegas, Nev. The conference is designed to educate women and youth in Nevada, Idaho and Utah about ongoing and emerging successful risk management strategies in production agriculture.
According to Kynda Curtis, USU Extension agricultural marketing specialist, conference participants will learn how to effectively manage financial, production, marketing, legal and human resource risks associated with an agricultural business.
“I think this is an excellent opportunity for youth and their parents to explore agriculture together,” Curtis said. “Attendees will come away with innovative ideas to benefit and improve their current or prospective agricultural operations.”
The conference will include sessions on developing a small-scale vegetable and fruit business, selling through farmers’ markets and marketing through community supported agriculture, human resource management, niche marketing, USDA loan and insurance programs, new product development and food safety considerations as well as grass-fed beef production. Keynote speaker is Temra Costa, author of “Farmer Jane: Women Changing the Way We Eat.”
Youth programs at the conference will include a quiz bowl, student presentations, school gardens and risk management planning for an FFA supervised agriculture experience.
The conference will be held at the South Point Hotel and Casino. Registration fee is $125 and includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. Special room rates are available for $49 a night. Scholarships are available for travel and hotel for youth and a parent on a first come first served basis. Contact Kim Heater at heater@unce.unr.edu for information.
