Eighth Annual Timber Harvest Tour. September 10, 2009. Join USU Forestry Extension and the Utah Chapter of the Society of American Foresters for the Eighth Annual Timber Harvest Tour on Reservation Ridge, north of Price, Utah. We will tour a recently completed salvage harvest following a significant Douglas-fir beetle outbreak. Unharvested areas surround the harvest, so it will be easy to get the ‘before and after’ feel. This is a Stewardship Contract on the Ashley National Forest, and includes extensive hand piling and pruning in an effort to control wildland fire threat. Because the harvest is adjacent to private property, including cabins and homes, the fuel reduction aspects of the harvest are especially important. We will also visit a timber harvest on private property that took place a few years ago. Landowners, loggers, and foresters will share their point of view on the harvest operations and other aspects of land managmement. An afternoon snack will be provided.

Meet at 1:30 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at the parking lot adjacent to Reservation Road and Hwy 191, east of Indian Canyon Summit, past mile marker 265, between Helper and Duchesne, Utah. This is the turn-off to Avantaquin Campground. Participants may also meet at 12:45 pm at the Greenwell Inn on 655 East Main Street in Price. We will carpool in 4x4 vehicles and plan to be back in town by 6:00 pm. RSVP to Darren McAvoy by phone 435-797-0560 or e-mail darren.mcavoy@usu.edu.
