Douglas-fir forest is found at medium to high elevations. Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, is not a true fir although it does have some similar charcteristics, particularly when it is young, to a true fir. It likes slightly more moist sites and can tolerate some shade.

Douglas-fir is also an important timber species.
