In recent years, a broad
range of new genetic tools have become available for use in aspen
and other Populus species. These tools are allowing us to answer
important questions about clonal dynamics, mutation accumulation,
the frequency and geography of sexual reproduction, and assessment
of genetic diversity in aspen stands. Our laboratory is involved
in rangewide and regional phylogeographic studies in aspen (Populus
tremuloides) as well as two smaller-scale studies of local genetic
variation. The scope and status of these projects will be discussed,
along with preliminary results.
