Utah Dairyman Honored by National Mastitis Council

The winners of the 2003 National Dairy Quality Awards were officially announced at the National Mastitis Council annual meeting held February 1-4, 2004 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The National Mastitis Council, along with Hoards Dairyman, DTN Dairy, QMI, Alcide Corp, and IBA, Inc. sponsored this years awards.

The purpose of the awards program is to honor dairy producers who exemplify quality milk production in the United States. Dairy farms are nominated for the award by professionals who work with producers, including dairy plant field representatives, veterinarians, nutritionists, and extension personnel.

In addition to milk quality indicators such as somatic cell count, bacteria count, and incidence of mastitis, the farms are judged on overall herd health and management practices which are implemented on the farm.

Winners were named in each of three categories: Platinum, Gold, and Silver. Among the awardees in the Silver category is Richard Maughan of Benson, Utah.
