While Utah is one of the most urban states in the nation, there are many small communities throughout the state. Survival of rural communities will depend on an understanding and application of the basic economic principles that affect rural Utah. Carbon County consists of several small communities that are isolated from the metropolitan centers along the Wasatch Front by a drive of more than one hour through mountainous country. The local economy depends primarily on the energy industry but community leaders are constantly trying to help diversify the economic base.
