When do I plant my vegetable garden? How do I improve my garden soil? How do I make a compost pile? These and many other gardening questions are answered in the book, “A Guide to Common Gardening Questions—Step-by-Step Recommendations for Successful Vegetable and Fruit Production in Northern Utah.” The USU Extension publication includes instructions on garden preparation, variety selection, garden layout and planting, starting garden plants from seed and container gardening. It also includes information on garden soil, garden maintenance and weed control. The information is presented in a simple format, and the book provides a list of additional publications that provide more details.

“A Guide to Common Gardening Questions” includes information on many types of growing practices that have been proven effective in Utah through research and demonstration work done by USU Extension. The 107-page book was written by USU Extension faculty members Katie Wagner, USU horticulture assistant professor in Salt Lake County; Shawn Olsen, USU agricultural professor in Davis County; and Dan Drost, state vegetable specialist.

The book is available for purchase at USU Extension offices in Logan, Ogden, Farmington, Salt Lake and Provo and online at extension.cart.usu.edu.
