Name the Native Bees
There are about 3,500 species of bees in North America and more than 20,000 species of bees in the world. The average length of the bee species in millimeters (mm) is 5 mm or under ¼- inch. The bees pictured below are some of the Native Bees found in Utah. Note that scientists have given them scientific (Latin) names so that other bee scientists in the world will know the bee they are talking about...science speak! But let’s say you and your friends want to talk about the bees you have been seeing in your yard? It might be easier to remember a "common" name.
Give the native bees a common name by clicking on the bee pictures below. You may submit a name even if the bee already has a common name posted. New common names will be randomly selected and posted each week. Check back often, maybe your bee name will be the selected for all to see.
