August Gardening Tips |
Keep up on the weeding and deadheading. - Check on hanging baskets and containers daily. The wind and sun can dry them out very quickly.
- Use water soluble fertilizer in existing container gardens.
- Pick summer squash and zucchini every couple of days to keep the plants producing.
- Pick up and destroy any fruit that has fallen off trees to reduce insect pests.
- If you are going on vacation mow the lawn before you leave. Waiting to mow it until you return may remove more than 1/3 of the top growth which may weaken your lawn and make it more susceptible to insects and diseases.
- Remember that Kentucky Bluegrass lawns go dormant when temperatures are over 96°.
- Herbicides can damage plants when they are used in high heat. Check the label and follow all of the instructions carefully.
- Check hose connections, pipes, and valves for water leaks. Even small leaks can waste gallons of water each day.
- Preform a monthly maintenance check of your sprinkler system.
