4-H Scholarships
iCivics (formerly Our Courts) is a web-based education project designed to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in our democracy. iCivics is the vision of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is concerned that students are not getting the information and tools they need for civic participation, and that civics teachers need better materials and support.

4-H Scholarships and Portfolios
Hey all –
Just a reminder that scholarships and portfolios for State Competition are due on Friday, February 15th. They must be in the State office on this date!!
The portfolio competition is the first stage to attend National 4-H Congress. Youth must be in 9-12 grade to compete. http://utah4h.org/htm/general-forms/portfolios. Scholarships are for those in 12th grade, please refer to website for more details. http://utah4-h.org/htm/scholarships
Please be sure to mark portfolios to note if they are being judged for scholarships, National 4-H Congress, or both. (You can just use a post-it note on the front)
Also, we are looking for people to come help judge portfolios. We will be judging on Tuesday February 19th at the Utah County Extension Office. We will be starting at 10 and going to about 3. This is the BEST way to be trained in how portfolios should be done. We welcome volunteers, agents, program assistants or any one that wants to learn how portfolios are judged. Thanks for all you do! Tulip Journey North
Take part in an international citizen scientist project by planting a Tulip Test Garden. This program targets 3-4 grade students. Thanksgiving Point will provide you with enough bulbs (one per student), journals and an easy to follow lesson plan. You will also get a mid-year and spring follow up activity. Ideally you would contact your local elementary school(s) and see if they are interested in being involved. Then contact Corinne to make arrangements for the bulbs and other materials. For details about this easy to do citizen scientist program see here:
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/tulips/HowTo.html
It would be great for 4-H to assist get some of the more remote locations on the map involved.
Fairchild Challenge @ Thanksgiving Point
The Fairchild Challenge is a multidisciplinary, environmental education program designed to give high school students an opportunity to express their opinions. By appealing to their innate sense of creativity and curiosity, the Fairchild Challenge invites students to investigate the most difficult environmental issues, devise imaginative and effective responses to the issues, and take action to address them. The Fairchild Challenge was designed and initiated by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (Fairchild) in Coral Gables (Miami), Florida. Fairchild continues to support and train expansion sites for The Fairchild Challenge around the world.
Typically this is open to high school around the state. We are currently looking at options on how a local 4-H group might get involved if the local high school is not involved. Possibly a Teen Council and it's members could compete in the various challenge.
What do you do? There are a # of challenges ex. Recycle Clothing Design/Construction, Video, Performance, Cooking and more. I have attached the details for this year's challenges. Website and posters will soon be updated. Each kid that is involved gets a t-shirt and passes to Thanksgiving Point Gardens. The winning group gets $1,000 cash to support their efforts in environmental education and action.
So share it with the local high school or consider getting your local 4-H teens (grades 9-12) involved.
